Lumi Tuomi (they/them) is a Finnish-Karelian artist. They work with photography, textile and hair-based works, and is inspired by the crossing of handcraft and contemporary art. At the heart of Tuomi’s artistic practice is a subtile skill of repurposing the hair from their mother’s hairbrush thematically and as a material, which becomes a red thread intertwining throughout their works. In their works they examine the possibilities and forms of Karelian photography, the conflicting nature of hair, and garden as a living archive of cultural heritage. As a non-binary artist, Tuomi wanders in-between of binaries, cultural borders and traditions, leaning into the knowledge and skills of those who came before.
In their recent practice, Tuomi investigates the twined histories and fates of Karelian’s and plants together with Ritva Tuomi. The artist duo’s first exhibition will be on show in Pori Art Museum’s Poriginal gallery in the spring of 2026.
Tuomi currently finalises their masters degree in Photography in Aalto University. They graduated from the photography department of Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in 2021. Selected group exhibitions include Bloom in Lokal gallery (2025); Keššetäh in Oksasenkatu 11 (2025); Masters of Photography — Image Being in the Finnish Museum of Photography (2025); PhotoVogue Festival in Base Milano (2023); and Generation 2020 and Generation 2017 exhibitions in Amos Rex and Amos Anderson Art Museum. Tuomi’s works are in the collections of the Finnish State Commission and the Finnish Museum of Photography.
Lumi Tuomi on suomalais-karjalainen taiteilija. Hän työskentelee valokuvan, tekstiilin ja hiusteosten parissa, inspiroituen teoksissaan käsityön ja nykytaiteen kohtaamispisteestä. Tuomen taiteellisen työskentelyn ytimessä on hienovarainen taito hyödyntää äitinsä hiusharjaan jäävä hius temaattisesti sekä materiaalina, joka muodostuu teoksien läpi kutoutuvaksi punaiseksi langaksi. Hän tarkastelee töissään karjalaisen valokuvan mahdollisuuksia ja ilmentymiä, hiusten ristiriitaisuutta sekä puutarhaa kulttuuriperinnön elävänä arkistona. Ei-binäärisenä karjalaisena taiteilijana, Tuomi kulkee binäärien, kulttuuristen rajojen ja perinteiden rajamaastoissa, nojautuen häntä edeltävien sukupolvien tietoon ja taitoihin.
Viimeaikaisessa työskentelyssään Tuomi syventyy karjalaisten ja kasvien kietoutuneisiin historioihin ja kohtaloihin yhdessä Ritva Tuomen kanssa. Taiteilijaparin ensimmäinen yhteisnäyttely nähdään Porin taidemuseon Poriginal galleriassa keväällä 2026.
Tuomi viimeistelee valokuvataiteen maisterintutkintoa Aalto-yliopistossa. Hän valmistui valokuvataiteen kandidaatiksi Haagin Royal Academy of Art korkeakoulusta vuonna 2021. Valittuja ryhmänäyttelyitä joihin Tuomi on osallistunut ovat Bloom Lokal galleriassa (2025); Keššetäh Oksasenkatu 11 galleriassa (2025); Valokuvan maisterit 2025 — Image Being Suomen valokuvataiteen museossa (2025); PhotoVogue Festival Base Milanossa (2023); sekä Generation 2020 ja Generation 2017 näyttelyt Amos Rex ja Amos Andersonin taidemuseoissa. Tuomen teoksia on Valtion taideteostoimikunnan ja Suomen valokuvataiteen museon kokoelmissa.
